Laying Horses
What do we mean by Laying Horses ?
If your not too familiar with the term Laying then visit our Lay Bet and Laying pages.
When Laying Horses, the basic theory is that we select a horse in the field that we DO NOT want to win. In other words we have to pick a loser. As easy as that initial thought may sound the process of successfully selecting losing horses is a little more difficult as there are quite a few few critical factors that can affect both the outcome and any profit or lose.
Starting from the point of knowing that to make our money from the Lay bet we need to find a Horse that wont win. Initially you would presume the rank outsider 100/1 shot has a very solid if not certain chance of NOT winning however this is not true, the horse still has a 'logical' chance of winning since it is running in the race. If there are 15 runners, the 100/1 shot horse still has a 1 in 15 logical chance of winning as with all the horses. The main reason why we should also eliminate the 100/1 horse is simply because of its price in the market. Imagine if you layed that horse for £100 stakes and the horse sprung to life in the final furlong and won, you would be liable for £10,000 in losses !

At the other end of the spectrum, we could lay the favorite as the liability is much less since the odds of the favorite are the lowest. This is a little safer way to lay since with favorites you do not carry the penalty of high odds and big losses but you have to expect to loss more of your lay bets simply because in Horse Racing, favorites DO win a good share of races, as much as 30-40% so laying the favorite is clearly not yet the best option either.
What we need to do is to try and find a horse that is of low odds in the market, but at the same time stands a much greater chance of losing than its odds suggest.
We have to use a set of rules or principles and know how to read a little form, nothing too complicated and if you can read this then your already capable of reading horse racing form. We also have to find all the low priced horses on the betting exchange and make a note of their race and price so we can either select them or eliminate them based on the selection system.
Once we have identified our selections, if we are serious about getting any longterm sustainable profit from laying we need to look more at how much we stake and how carefully we can manage our bankroll.
Bankroll Management is the most important thing other than the selections themselves that will determine whether any financial yield will be made. We will explain how you should manage your bankroll and how simple small adjustments of discipline and profit management can really help you capitolise income from Laying.
